There are many times when as an editor, one gets confused as to where to look for clues regarding the cause of death and where to draw a boundary. The first thing many people turn to as a source of information. The deceased person’s family is often the first ones to be contacted for interviews. It is important that you get only reliable information that can be built upon by confirmation with other human sources. On the behalf of the family of Carly Lovett, the deceased, a police officer filed a repost against a publication in the Lincolnshire Echo stating that Ms Lovett had been murdered in a rebel attack in Tunisia. The strange part is that this happened before the family had proof that she was deceased. However on the other hand, the company that had published the article claimed that they got the news from multiple confidential sources and that the family members were completely aware of the incident. This was taken under investigation under Clause 5. The conclusion that both parties came to was that the company had no other backup apart from the confidential sources and also that proper care was not taken for Ms Lovett’s family. The published content ruled her cause of death as suicide after being severely drunk and drugged in a hotel room. There were a couple of pictures to back this up. Proof can also be gathered from the victim’s social media accounts such as Facebook page. It is important to withhold excessive information and details form the things meant for public knowledge disclosure. However, the complaint was not about the pictures used. They were not making mockery of any sort but the improper handling of it could have left long term effects on the family. In another case, a man complained about a photo of her daughter being posted on the same page as missing or dead people after a terror attack in Manchester Arena. Her name was Lucy Cross. He confirmed that the person in the picture was not known as Lucy Cross and that the picture has been wrongfully used to impersonate his daughter. In this matter, adjudication was required. The root cause turned out to be false reporting by a fake Twitter account. Authentic publications must only take information from trusted agencies. After this mistake, the publication still did not take steps to correct the mistake. This lead to mistrust but that was later put down when the publication company realized it was their mistake and make necessary adjustments for the emotional turmoil the family had to suffer because of carelessness by the editor and their wrong judgement of source used.
